Clinton Announces NSF Grant to Drexel Univ for vBNSSource: HPCWire, March 6, 1998 Philadelphia, PA -- President Bill Clinton announced in San Francisco this morning that Drexel University is among 29 institutions awarded National Science Foundation (NSF) grants to allow connection to the very high performance Backbone Network Service (vBNS). The vBNS is a crucial player in the president's Next Generation Internet and is the initial interconnect for Internet 2 member institutions. The vBNS allows scientists and engineers across the country to collaborate and share powerful computing and information resources. This latest round of NSF awards brings the total number of institutions approved for connections to 92. Most institutions will receive High Performance Connections grants of up to $350,000 from NSF over two years for their connections to offset the cost of linking from the vBNS backbone to their sites. "This award will enhance the research capabilities of Drexel University," said John Bielic, Drexel's vice president for Information Resources and Technology (IRT). "With this high performance network capacity, Drexel will be able to expand current research and collaboration initiatives both with academic institutions and federal laboratories." Among the research project's included in Drexel's grant-winning proposal: GRAPE-6 (research into areas of star cluster dynamics and stellar simulations), sources of gravitational radiation numerical modeling, computational astrophysics, DMS chemistry in the marine atmosphere, aerosol characterization, pacific exploratory mission, advanced cluster computing, and the Hospital University Business School (HUBS) initiative. "The vBNS is a facility -- like a laboratory or a supercomputer center -- that will accelerate science in all disciplines as well as push the limits of networking technology and applications," said George Strawn, director of NSF's Advanced Networking Infrastructure and Research division.
