Rice II Meeting: Visions and RoadmapsFrom: Aeronautics Systems Center / Major Shared Resource Center (ASC MSRC) Journal, Spring 1998 Members of the Programming Environment and Training (PET) Academic Executive Committee and the PET Academic Coordinating Committee met at Rice University on January 29-30, 1998. The goals for the meeting were to develop a shared vision of where the academicians wanted to go with PET and to develop "roadmaps" showing how they intend to reach that vision. PET directors and on-site academic leads provided brief perspectives of PET. The group discussed several points that will add strength to the driving forces behind achieving the PET vision. PET must focus on searching for application specific programs within the services where outputs are useful to the users. ASC MSRC's scientific visualization capabilities will serve as a key factor in enhancing productivity and boosting effective research and project design outcomes.
The group agreed that a vision and "roadmaps" focusing on key technical areas be
documented. These technical areas include Meta Computing (Andrew Grimshaw,
University of Virginia), System Programming Tools (Chuck Koelbel, Rice University),
Training and Collaboration Technologies (Charlie Bender, Ohio Supercomputer Center),
Scientific Visualization (John Toole, National Center for Supercomputing Applications),
and Application Tools (Joe Thompson, Mississippi State University).
