ACM Inducts Ken Kennedy as Distinguished Contributor Mar. 10


Houston, Texas -- During its "Computing Week '95" in Nashville, Tennessee, on March 1, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) made Dr. Ken Kennedy an "ACM Fellow" in honor of his outstanding achievements in high performance computing and his significant contributions to the ACM.

Kennedy is a professor of computer science at Rice University and director of the Center for Research on Parallel Computation, a major National Science Foundation research center based at Rice. According to ACM President Stuart Zweben, Kennedy's "contributions reflect the powers of [his] vision and [his] ability to inspire colleagues and students to advance the computing field."

Through Kennedy's leadership, the CRPC provides Texas with a unique resource in high-performance computing, an area predicted to become a $100 billion industry within a decade. Many corporations in the industry, including the Texas-based Convex Computers, have benefited directly from CRPC technologies.

Companies from other industries have also benefited as computing users from the center's work. Specific examples in Houston include Exxon, Shell and Western Atlas. By coordinating many microprocessors working together on a single application, parallel computing gives these companies unprecedented power and speed to tackle important tasks: from evaluating oil recovery strategies to designing airplanes and managing large databases.

As director of the CRPC, Kennedy directs researchers from four universities and two research laboratories across the nation. With a budget of $25 million over the next six years, the CRPC represents the largest individual research grant ever at Rice University. Among Kennedy's other contributions to the Rice community, he has helped to spearhead Rice's current $45 million campaign for computational engineering, has directed more than 25 Ph.D. candidates in computer science, and has chaired the Computer Science Department from its founding in 1984 until 1992.

A native Texan, Kennedy has been actively involved in the Houston community for many years, serving on the governing boards of The Rice School/La Escuela Rice and the Houston Society for the Performing Arts.

Nationally, Kennedy has made significant contributions in the high- performance computing field. He has served on the National Research Council and the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. In addition to becoming an ACM Fellow this year, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1990 and became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1994.

Founded in 1947 as the "The First Society in Computing," the ACM is an 85,000-member, international scientific and educational organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, engineering and application of information technology.
