CASC MEETING
April 8-10, 1998, Rice University

In April, the Center for Research on Parallel Computation (CRPC), an NSF-funded Science and Technology Center, will host the Coalition of Academic Supercomputing Centers (CASC) meeting at Rice University.

CRPC Director Ken Kennedy will speak to the group about the latest developments with the Presidential Advisory Committee on High Performance Computing and Communications, Information Technology, and the Next Generation Internet. Ken requests that you email questions you want him to address directly to Kathy El-Messidi at elmessy@rice.edu.

Richard Tapia, CRPC Director of Education and Human Resources and one of the first recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring, will discuss how academic supercomputing centers can encourage minorities and women in the computational sciences.

Richard A. Alo, Executive Director of the Center for Computational Science and Advanced Distributed Simulation at University of Houston-Downtown, will speak on mentoring minorities from high school through graduate school. Dr. Alo will tell us about summer and academic year programs as well as research opportunities at his center.

A tour of the Rice campus, including the new computational science and engineering building, Duncan Hall, is planned.

The group will meet at 6:30pm, on Wednesday, April 8, at The Blue Monkey, at City Streets (address and map are on web site) for an informal buffet and line dancing (including lessons courtesy of Rice students).

On Thursday evening at 6:30pm, a more formal dinner will take place at Vargo's (address and map are on web site). Richard Tapia will speak to the group after dinner.

After a business meeting, we will adjourn at about 11am on Friday, April 10.
