Paul Messina, CRPC researcher and executive committee member, was one of 100 recipients of the 1992 "Federal 100" award, sponsored by Federal Computer Week. According to Edith Holmes, corporate vice president and editor of Federal Computer Week, the award is given each year to professionals in academia, government, and industry for "their ability to manage, to influence, and to shape the government systems arena." Messina was recognized for spearheading the acquisition of the Intel Touchstone Delta for use by the CRPC and other research institutions. To purchase the Intel machine, Messina successfully brought together several government agencies and universities to form the Concurrent Supercomputing Consortium. Federal Computing Week called the acquisition "one of the biggest deals in the federal supercomputing community in 1991." Among others who received the award were Vice President-elect Albert Gore, Jr. and Stephen Squires of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
