PARALLEL PROGRAMMING BOOK THRIVING ON WORLD WIDE WEBIan Foster, a researcher with the CRPC and Argonne National Laboratory, has recently written a parallel programming book available in hardcopy form and through the World Wide Web.Published by Addison-Wesley, Designing and Building Parallel Programs is one of the first of its kind to be offered freely through the World Wide Web (WWW), offering students and professionals a comprehensive online introduction to learning parallel programming for science and engineering applications. The book covers program design, analysis, tools, and resources and offers numerous examples in CRPC-related parallel languages such as CC++, Fortran M, HPF, and MPI. The online version contains the full text of the hardcopy book as well as a collection of public domain parallel software tools, various educational resources, and links to other WWW sites in parallel computing. It is available through the World Wide Web by accessing the URL http://www-unix.mcs.anl.gov/dbpp/. Foster reports that the online version has received much interest from people in the research and educational communities. "It is now online and proving very popular," he said. "The book accounts for over thirty percent of the web traffic for Argonne's MCS division's server. Thousands of people have been accessing it. It has already been adopted as a text at many universities and colleges." Table of Contents |
