CRPC Director of Education and Human Resources Richard Tapia gave the keynote address at the September 10th Symposium on "Mentoring for the Development of a Scientific and Technological Workforce of the 21st Century" held in Washington, D.C. Tapia spoke on "Mentoring for the 21st Century" as part of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring Program. Professor Tapia was one of the first recipients of this award on September 25, 1997.

"Mentoring will become increasingly important in this post-affirmative action era if we are to prepare not only the quantity, but also the quality of students the country needs to solve the critical lack of minority leadership at the national level," Tapia emphasized in his address.

President Clinton, who spoke to the honorees and honored attendees later at the White House, stated that "If we are serious about having the best scientists and engineers in the world, we can't leave anyone behind."
