High School Students Prepare for College at Rice Summer Programs

Two CRPC-sponsored programs held at Rice University in June offered high school students and their teachers the opportunity to learn about various science and engineering fields, as well as career opportunities in science and insights on what to expect in college.

Thirty-two students and four faculty sponsors from the Science Academy of South Texas came to the university June 1-12 to attend lectures and lab tours conducted by Rice faculty and graduate students. They attended workshops on communication skills necessary for the college application process, and took field trips to institutions and companies that included Baylor College of Medicine, Shell, Texas Instruments, and NASA. Students from Rice University's Diversity Graduate Program in Science and Engineering served as mentors to the students from both schools. During the week of June 14, fourteen students and two faculty sponsors from the Milby Science Institute came to the university for a similar program. They also attended lectures, lab tours, and communications workshops and spent one day at the Baylor College of Medicine, where they observed surgery and participated in a "brain lab."

The Science Academy of South Texas program has been conducted for seven years and this is the fourth year for the Milby Science Institute summer program. Major funding is provided by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Biological Sciences Education Program with support from the CRPC.

These programs are only open to students from the Science Academy of South Texas and Milby Science Institute. For more information, contact Jennifer Overton at (713) 527-4781 or overton@bioc.rice.edu.
