High School Students 'Experience College' in Summer Programs at Rice

Two CRPC-sponsored programs held at Rice University in June offered high school students and their teachers the opportunity to learn about various science and engineering fields, as well as what to expect in college and career opportunities in the sciences.

Thirty-two students and four faculty sponsors from the Science Academy of South Texas came to the university June 2-13 to attend lectures and lab tours conducted by Rice faculty and graduate students. They learned about the research of Rice student participants of the CRPC's Spend a Summer with a Scientist (SaS) program. The SaS students continued their tradition of inspiring and mentoring the younger students.

Dr.John Margrave and his assistant entertain and instruct Science Academy of South Texas Program participants with his chemistry magic show.
During the week of June 15, 13 students and two faculty sponsors from the Milby Science Institute came to the university for a similar program. Participants from both programs commented that the internships served to confirm their desire to study science and engineering and were valuable in preparing them for what to expect once they begin their college studies.

"This made me realize how beneficial it is to apply myself in high school in preparation for my college education and future career," commented one Milby student. A student from the Science Academy of South Texas said, "I was exposed to many areas of science and engineering that I had not considered before. This has given me a much wider view about all the career opportunities available." Added another student, "I used to think some areas of science were boring, but now I think it would be fun to learn more about them."

These six-year-old programs are sponsored by both the CRPC and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Biological Sciences Education Program at Rice.
