CRPC AWARDS AND HONORS

Robert Bixby, CRPC researcher and Rice University professor, has been inducted into the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). He was among 85 engineers elected to membership in the NAE in February. The academy honors those who have made important contributions to engineering theory and practice, and pioneered new and developing fields of technology.

Cynthia Lanius, CRPC Manager of K-12 Education, has been named a Spring 1997 STAR Honoree by the STAR (Students and Teachers Achieving Recognition) Society of the National Education and Technology Alliance. Lanius, who teaches mathematics at Milby High School in Houston, was honored for "using the Internet in the classroom and beyond."

CRPC GirlTECH '96 participant Judy Lee has won the Texas Medical Association's Award for Excellence in Science Teaching. Since 1990, the award has honored elementary, junior high, and senior high teachers in Texas who share their energy and enthusiasm for science through creative and innovative methods. Lee, a teacher at Blocker Middle School in Texas City, is one of two junior high teachers who received the award this year.

Theresa Chatman, CRPC manager of outreach programs, received Rice University's Distinguished Service Award in April. The honor is in recognition of her performance above and beyond her demanding job description at the CRPC, which has benefitted the Rice community for more than seven years.

CRPC newsletter editor Gretchen Jacobson has won a Women in Communications (WIC) 1997 Matrix Award for Parallel Computing Research. Designed by Houston firm Dwight Douthit Design, Parallel Computing Research was selected by the Houston Professional Chapter of WIC as a winner in the newsletter series category.
