GOVERNMENT EXTENDS STC PROGRAM

In a meeting held February 21, the National Science Board (NSB) approved the continuation of the nine-year-old Science and Technology Center (STC) Program. A National Science Foundation (NSF) competition for new STCs will be initiated in February 1998.

Each competition (to be held every three years) will be for approximately $25 million per year, with a total award per center ranging from about $1.5 million to $4.0 million. Institutional cost sharing will be a consideration. New centers will receive an initial five years of NSF support, with one possible five-year renewal determined by a multiphase review process. The STC Program will be evaluated or reviewed seven years after the first set of new centers is awarded.

The competitions will be open to all fields of science normally supported by the NSF. The existing 24 STCs will be allowed to recompete. The CRPC is one of the 11 original STCs established in 1989.

NSB assistant directors, participating office heads, and the director of OSTI will manage the STC program. OSTI will oversee the competition funds, and the technical coordinators within the directorates will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the individual centers.
