Workshop Explores Impact of CRPC Outreach on the Houston Community

On July 31, 1993, the CRPC held the "K-12 Activities in the Computational and Applied Mathematical Sciences" workshop at Rice University. Led by Richard Tapia, the workshop addressed how the center can help the Houston community through outreach education.

The workshop was attended by a broad spectrum of people in mathematical education, from students to teachers to outreach program coordinators. Many of these attendees shared their experiences with the outreach programs in which they have participated. Students from the CRPC's "Spend a Summer with a Scientist" program discussed their research projects. West University Elementary School teacher Lucille Barrera discussed her scientist-of-the-month activities, which were inspired by her participation in one of the CRPC's "Mathematics and Computational Science Awareness" (MCSA) workshops (see Parallel Computing Research, July 1993, p. 14). Cynthia Lanius, a mathematics teacher at Milby High School and an MCSA participant, talked about how the MCSA had a positive impact on the Milby/Rice project to develop a video that encourages students in mathematics. Nora Sabelli, Director of Applications of Advanced Technologies and Education at the National Science Foundation, gave a talk on the NSF's view toward mathematics education.

"The workshop was successful because it gave the CRPC feedback on our past outreach efforts," said Tapia. "This feedback will benefit us tremendously in our future programs." One concrete suggestion was to focus future editions of the "Mathematics and Computational Science Awareness" workshop on reaching counsellors, principals, and parents.
