Parallel Profile: Rick L. Stevens

Director, Mathematics and Computer Science Division and Director,High- Performance Computing and Communications Program Argonne National Laboratory

Rick Stevens is pursuing research activities in evaluating architecture and performance of high-performance computing systems, developing scientific algorithms for use of MPP systems, combining symbolic and numerical methods in scientific applications, improving modeling and CAD systems for molecular nanotechnology, and using virtual reality in the visualization of scientific data and processes.

Stevens has been at Argonne National Laboratory since 1985 and has worked in parallel computing since 1984. From March 1987 until August 1991 he managed the Advanced Computing Research Facility, conducting research in parallel computing tools, automated reasoning applications, scientific visualization, global climate modeling, and performance evaluation. From August 1991 until December 1991 he was associate director of the Mathematics and Computer Science Division and director of ANL's program in High-Performance Computing. During this time he developed ANL's HPCC program that includes research efforts in applications, programming tools, and scientific visualization. He also helped to found the Concurrent SuperComputing Consortium (CSCC) in 1990 in part to provide access to large-scale parallel computing for ANL. From December 1991 to the present he has been director of the Mathematics and Computer Science Division and continues to direct the laboratory's efforts in high-performance computing. Most recently he has led the joint ANL/IBM activity in parallel computing, which includes the installation of a large SP1 system at ANL.

Stevens was recently appointed to the Executive Committee of the CRPC. Ken Kennedy, CRPC Director, stated "Rick Stevens brings a new perspective and valuable experience to the EC." Other achievements include: Founding Member of Policy Board, Concurrent Supercomputing Consortium; Director of Argonne's High-Performance Computing Research Consortium; Co-PI of the CSCC's Scalable I/O Initiative and National Scalable I/O Laboratory; Co-PI on three federal Grand Challenge awards; Member of Program Committee, Supercomputing '93; Program Chair, Interagency Workshop on High-Performance Computing Applications and Software Technology; Member of the Technical Advisory Board, IBM's Highly Parallel Supercomputing Systems Laboratory.

Stevens was educated in physics, applied mathematics, and computer science at Michigan State University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Northwestern University.
