CRPC Research Receives Heterogeneous Computing Challenge AwardA CRPC research project won an award in the second annual Heterogeneous Computing Challenge at the SUPERCOMPUTING '92 conference in Minneapolis in November. The awards are given to successful applications running on SCinet'92, the conference computing network. The researchers presenting the challenge "PVM Takes over the World" included CRPC researchers Jack Dongarra and Robert Manchek from the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The pair successfully ran the PVM and HeNCE applications on SCinet'92, in addition to presenting a tutorial on "Paradigms and Tools for Heterogeneous Network Computing." The PVM (Parallel Virtual Machine) application is a software infrastructure that allows groups of machines to be used as a general-purpose concur rent computing resource. HeNCE is a graphical toolkit and methodology that eases the task of application development for PVM. Table of Contents
