CRPC Awards and Honors


Richard Tapia wins AAAS Lifetime Mentor Award

Richard A. Tapia, CRPC Director of Education and Human Resources and Noah Harding Professor of Computational and Applied Mathematics at Rice University, has won the 1997 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Lifetime Mentor Award.

The award honors individuals who demonstrate extraordinary leadership to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in science and engineering, including women of all racial/ethnic groups; African-American, American Indian, and Hispanic men; and/or people with disabilities. Recipients receive a prize of $5,000 and a commemorative plaque.

Tapia is widely recognized for his leadership, career accomplishments, and extensive work to mentor and encourage minority and female students in math and science. In 1996, Tapia was one of the first recipients of the NSF's Presidental Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. He was was appointed by President Clinton to the National Science Board that year, and was named 1996 Hispanic Engineer of the Year by Hispanic Engineer Magazine.

Geoffrey Fox, director of The Northeast Parallel Architectures Center (NPAC) and Professor of Physics and Computer Science at Syracuse University, has been recognized by LASERGUIDE for his work on the Kids Web site.
