On March 9-10, 1994, 80 representatives from universities and industry met at Argonne National Laboratory to hear about the Argonne High- Performance Computing Research Consortium and the IBM Scalable POWERparallel System (SP1). The workshop was designed for institutions interested in joining the consortium.

The first day focused on Argonne's high-performance computing program, the role of the consortium, and the state of scalable parallel computing today. This part of the workshop was intended principally for institutional executives. The second day was more technically oriented, with discussions about compilers, software libraries, file systems, and Argonne's overall experience with the SP1.

Several applications case studies using the SP1 were given, including studies in climate modeling, computational chemistry, computational biology, computational electromagnetics, and dynamics of complex mechanical systems. Many problems in these areas are computationally demanding and require both the exceptional speed and extremely large memory capabilities offered by the SP1.

As a follow-up to this meeting, Argonne plans to hold smaller workshops focusing on particular common problems and solutions in using scalable parallel computers. These workshops will organize groups of researchers from leading industrial, university, and government laboratories and Argonne scientists, who will test the SP1's capabilities and use the machine to solve important practical problems.
